Food is remarkably versatile. Some foods can create illness and chronic disease, while others can heal our bodies — and the choice is ours. If we keep putting foods that harm us into our bodies, we become more susceptible to conditions such as cancer, diabetes and autoimmune disease.
Cancer is one of the most common chronic conditions, and our chances of fighting it improve when we go above and beyond the treatments our doctor prescribes. We need to take charge of every aspect of our lives. Besides completing our treatment, that means clearing our minds, connecting with our bodies and, of course, focusing on healthy eating. Our food is part of the journey to recovery, and the sooner we turn our attention to diet, the sooner the healing begins.
The recipes
Below are some of my favourite and most flavourful recipes — dishes that not only taste amazing but are also full of cancer-fighting goodness.
Roasted carrot soup
Roasted carrot soup is a real cancer-fighting winner. It is full of carotenoids such as beta-carotene, along with the phytochemicals that help keep your immune system strong. These powerful antioxidants also protect the cell membranes from toxins and can help slow the growth of cancer cells.
Keto bread
Keto bread is a carb-free bread made with almond flour and no sugar. What I love most about it is how nutrient-dense the ingredients are: the seeds and coconut oil make it a superfood in its own right. It is high in fibre, good fats and healthy proteins, and it is extremely easy to make.
Shepherd's pie
This dish is always a favourite among my clients. During treatment, patients can often experience low haemoglobin and protein levels, so I recommend enjoying red meat two or three times a month. This shepherd's pie is keto-friendly because it uses cancer-fighting cauliflower mash instead of potatoes, keeping it low in carbohydrates and healthy.
