Grape seed extract is a dietary supplement made from grape seeds. It acts as an antioxidant and has been linked to several health benefits, including lowering blood pressure, lowering cholesterol and strengthening the immune system.

How grape seed extract may help against cancer

Grape seed extract is a rich source of proanthocyanidin, a chemical compound shown to have anti-cancer effects. It has been found to inhibit the development of cancer from carcinogens (substances that can cause cancer) and to prevent cancer cell growth and proliferation, as well as to promote cancer cell death through a process called apoptosis, or programmed cell death.

Studies have shown potential anti-cancer effects against skin, colorectal, prostate and breast cancers.

How grape seed extract is taken

Grape seed extract can be taken orally as a supplement, which may help to lower the risk of developing cancer and support good health overall.

What the research suggests

Several studies have examined grape seed extract and cancer. Work by Katiyar and Athar evaluates its anti-cancer activity against various forms of cancer, while other studies look more closely at its mechanism of action in bladder cancer cells and its efficacy against lung cancer. A further review considers the anti-cancer properties of grape seed extract alongside other grape-based products.
